A trio of officers perished and at least 15 others were hurt in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation was triggered as officers and emergency crews entered the house in the vicinity of the city of Verona to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister who were older adults.

The three victims who died served in the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

Two individuals were taken into custody at the location and one more individual who ran away subsequent to the blast was apprehended not long after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.

The blast could be heard approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the location revealed the property left as a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the brother and sister trio in the earlier times.

Background and Motive

The leader of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the farmhouse was facing an eviction order due to debts accumulated by the siblings.

Negotiators had been sent to talk with the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the police came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators believe one of the residents triggered the detonation.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief the police commander informed the media.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the explosion directly hit our members,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Those injured by the blast included eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had lacked electrical service.

The official thought the blast had occurred on a story above the entrance and stated to the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the incident, he revealed members had “heard a whistle, likely the gas canisters being activated”.

Local Response

“We all knew the situation was dire,” local residents informed Italian media, adding that the three had previously threatened to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto joined other government officials in paying tribute to the three men who had lost their lives in the service of their country.
