Trump Compels the Thai government to Reaffirm Commitment to Cambodia Truce with Trade Penalties

Washington has exerted influence on the Thai administration to reaffirm its dedication to a ceasefire agreement with the Cambodian side, stating that trade negotiations could be halted as efforts are made to prevent a Donald Trump-brokered ceasefire arrangement from falling apart.

Border Tensions Escalate

Earlier this week, Thai officials declared it was suspending the ceasefire deal, alleging Cambodian forces of planting new explosives along the shared border, including one that allegedly wounded a Thai military personnel on duty, who suffered a foot amputation in the explosion.

Following this, a fatality occurred and multiple individuals injured by gunfire along the border between the two nations, sparking fears of a fresh wave of retaliatory clashes.

American Economic Leverage

On Saturday, a Thai foreign ministry spokesperson told journalists that a official communication from the Office of the US Trade Representative announcing the pause in trade negotiations was received on Friday night.

He quoted the document as saying that discussions on trade – which are addressing a US tariff of 19% – could restart once the Thai government renewed its pledge to implementing the mutual truce agreement.

“Tariff negotiations will continue and remain separate from border issues,” stated another government spokesperson.

Trump’s Tariff Threat

Speaking to the press on Air Force One as he traveled to the Sunshine State on Friday, the US leader suggested that he had used the “threat of tariffs” in discussions with the ASEAN nation heads.

He stated, “I stopped a war just today through the use of tariffs, the threat of tariffs,” continuing, “they’re doing great. I think they’re gonna be fine.”

Ceasefire Agreement Background

The President witnessed the finalization of a ceasefire agreement, held in Malaysia this last autumn, and has touted it as one of several deals around the globe he claims should earn him the prestigious peace award.

The most severe clashes in a ten years between military forces of both nations broke out in mid-summer, with gunfire, artillery and airstrikes causing numerous fatalities and 300,000 displaced.

Historic Frontier Conflict

The two neighboring countries have a historic territorial disagreement that originates from disagreements over colonial-era maps created by French cartographers. Ancient temples along the frontier are claimed by both sides.
